Very basic auberge. You need either sleeping bag or your own sheets as beds matrases and pillows are covered in plastic protection... you also need blankets as this place is not heated - now in November inside is 12C.
A kettle for heating a water would be great and costs nothing.
At least they have hot water to shower and drying rack to let clothes wet from november rain dry.
Thanks monks - you teach us skmplicity - don't you...
Very bad they want only $$ I asked for some food they gave nothing to me!!!
Between the mountains and the beach, in a quiet place, but with easy access. To live with the Cistercians in a moment of prayer or to dedicate oneself to one's own work in the inn or to rest or to walk through those corners of infinite Cantabria. Without forgetting the great building that welcomes us, especially the church.
On my trip through Cantabria we stopped to buy trapa cheese at the abbey, so far so good, they have cheese and butter 🧈 that takes your breath away, but then I had planned to see the abbey, which was described as great in the reviews, but which one was it? My surprise is that it is now closed to the public that it cannot be visited. If so, I don't understand why it says open and hours when looking for a disappointment.
closed to the public
The original Cistercian abbey is now a Trappist monastery dedicated to Santa Maria Viaceli. It was built in the neo-Gothic style (1906-1910). We recommend the excellent Trappist cheese “Queso Trapa”, which is sold in the small shop on the street.
Spectacular cheese and wine. You can buy it in the small office that the monks have.
I bought the semi-cured cheese that the monks make at the Abbey workshop's office and it is delicious. There is a good quality price relation. I will return whenever I have the opportunity to get close to Cóbreces.
Worth seeing monastery where the monks make and sell cheese themselves.
